Deep Cycle Batteries for Solar Electric System

Since the PV panels produce electricity whenever the sun shines on them, if the system is off-grid, you’ll need a battery bank (i.e. a group of batteries wired together) to store energy so as to have electricity at night or on cloudy days. For off-grid systems, battery banks are typically sized to keep household electricity running for one to three cloudy days. Grid intertied systems can also include battery banks to provide emergency backup power during blackouts- perfect for keeping critical electric loads operating until grid power is restored

Deep cycle includes solar electric (PV), backup power and boat “house” batteries. The major construction types are flooded (wet), gelled and AGM (absorbed glass mat)

Deep cycle batteries are designed to be discharged down as much as 80% the time, and have much thicker plates. The major difference between deep cycle battery and other s that the plates are SOLID lead plates- not sponge. This gives less surface area, thus less “instant” power like starting batteries need.

Lead-acid batteries are the most common battery used in solar electric systems. Flooded lead acid batteries are usually the least expensive, but require adding distilled water occasionally to replenish water lost during the normal charging process

Sealed Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are sometimes called “starved electrolytic” or “dry’, because the fiberglass mat is only 95% saturated with sulfuric acid and there is no excess liquid. They are maintenance free and designed for grid tied systems where the batteries are typically kept at a full state of charge

Gel-cell batteries can be a good choice to use in vibrated space due to their freeze-resistant qualities. They are “valve regulated” which means that a valve keep a slight positive pressure. In rechargeable batteries, this process can be repeated many times. Batteries are not 100% efficient-some energy is lost as heat and chemical reactions when discharging and charging. If you use 1000 watts from a battery, it might take 1050 or 1250 watts or more to fully charge.

Solar Energy Alternative to Non-Renewable and Polluting Fossil Fuels

In today’s climate of growing energy needs and increasing environmental concern, alternatives to the use of non-renewable and polluting fossil fuels have to be investigated. One of such alternatives is solar energy. Solar energy is quite simply the energy produced directly by the Sun and collected elsewhere, normally the Earth.

The Solar Energy Conversion System

There are many different types of solar energy systems that will convert the solar resource into a useful form of energy. One, the solar resource is captured and converted into heat which is then supplied to a demand for thermal energy (thermal load) such as house heating, hot water heating or heat for industrial processes.

The Solar Energy Resource

The basic resource for all solar energy system is the sun. Knowledge of the quantity and quality of solar energy available at a specific location is of prime importance for the design of any solar energy system. Although the solar radiation (insulation) is relatively constant outside the earth’s atmosphere, local climate influences can cause wide variations in available insulation on the earth’s surface from site to site.

Concentrating solar collectors are used when higher temperatures are required. Solar energy falling on a large reflective surface is reflected onto a smaller area before it is converted into heat.
